TODAY’S TECH ALERT
The warning was fake, but you still need to act
If you saw headlines claiming that Google warned all 2.5 billion Gmail users to change our passwords, you’re not alone. The story went viral. And it wasn’t true.
Google came out and said flatly: No, we did not issue that alert. But that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook.
🚨 Here’s what’s really going on
A recent data breach at Salesforce gave scammers just enough personal info to launch a new wave of phishing attacks, including emails, text messages and even phone calls specifically targeting Gmail users.
These aren’t random spam messages. They’re polished, personalized, and some look like they’re coming straight from Google support.
So while Google didn’t send out a warning, they did confirm these scams are ramping up and that you should absolutely be locking down your account.
Let’s walk through it.
🔧 What you need to do now
Step 1: Change your Gmail password
Even if your account hasn’t been touched, a fresh password gives you a clean slate. Go to myaccount.google.com, click Security, then Password, enter your current password and set a new one.
Don’t recycle an old one. Don’t use your dog’s name. Use something strong and random. This is exactly what NordPass does. It creates strong passwords and remembers them for you, so you don’t have to.
Step 2: Turn on two-factor authentication
While you’re in your account settings, scroll to 2-Step Verification and turn it on.
Better yet, set up passkeys. They use Face ID, your fingerprint or your device as the key. No password, no phishing risk.
NordPass works with both and makes the setup process painless.
🧠 Why this still matters
Even though the original headline was wrong, the danger is real. Scammers are using that buzz to make their phishing attempts more believable. If you get an email or a call claiming to be from Google support, hang up, delete it, move on.
You don’t need to live in fear. You just need to lock things down and move forward smartly.
